Last August the BBC revealed Peter Capaldi had been cast to replace Matt Smith as the new Doctor when the 11th falls this Christmas. It is likely (though not assured) that Smith’s final episode will primarily feature the 11th, with a little Capaldi sprinkled in at the end after the regeneration. So we might have to wait until next August before we see the 12th Doctor in full force - and in full costume.
So, if you’re like me, you’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time daydreaming about which direction the writers (and actor!) will take this new Doctor, and how his costume will evolve from the tweed & bow tie of 11.
In honor of this regeneration, and to have some fun killing time before the 50th Anniversary Special, I’ve concocted twelve costume designs for this 12th iteration of the Time Lord we’ve come to know and love. I will release one each week day here on tumblr, starting today!
I am not a costume designer, and I’m in no way affiliated with the production of Doctor Who - though that would be incredible! Just a fan stretching my design skills and having fun.
So, I give you….
1.) The Alien Gentleman
Let’s start off by rowing the boat out there a bit. Doctor Who has featured some pretty outlandish costumes during its 50 years, as it should - considering the main character of the show is an alien not bound by time or place (let alone modern British fashion.) However, when the show returned in 2006, the alien Doctor dressed himself in clothes that are a bit too conveniently appropriate for 2006-2013 life on Earth.
This decision was likely made to win over new viewers who would have a difficult time relating to or wanting to be someone who dresses like Mork from Ork.
Since the companions in the new series call 2006-2013 Earth home, many of the stories have taken place in that time period. So, plot wise, it does make some sense dressing the Doctor in clothes of that period. It also frees the writers up from having to include comments about the Doctors wardrobe every episode. Example: "Hey Rose, why is your friend dressed like a space clown?", "Hey, what is that guy wearing? Are they filming a movie here?"
The show is due for a shakeup, though, and I’m wondering if the writers (and designers, as foreshadowed by Smith’s new frock coat and TARDIS interior) will try to capture the tone of era’s gone by.
So, The Alien Gentlemen. A late 60s British chap who may or may not take “trips” through time and space in his psychedelic snog box. I like the image of this skinny Doctor wearing a plush fur coat, but can’t imagine the Doctor ever condoning the death of a creature for fashion. Maybe he has some broken parts of a robo Yeti in one of the TARDIS’s junk cabinets, and brought its synthetic fur coat to the tailors. Pretty ridiculous, but so it goes!
Since the sonic screwdriver is pretty much a magic wand now, I’ve made this Doctor’s simply that - a black wand with a single glowing orb at the tip.
A flamboyant tie, a feather in the hat, and some water proof boots for those tricky swamp planets and there you have it. The Alien Gentlemen.
Tomorrow we’ll see something more down to Earth!
